Lahore Set to Launch First Fully Underground Metro: The Blue Line Project

The city of Lahore is on the verge of a major transportation revolution with the introduction of its first-ever fully underground metro train, the Blue Line Metro. This ambitious project, spanning 27 kilometers from Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk, is designed to enhance urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and promote eco-friendly public transportation. The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has allocated a Rs600 billion budget for the project, with an expected completion timeline of three years.

A Game-Changer for Lahore’s Public Transport

The Punjab Transport Department has already initiated feasibility studies and design planning for the Blue Line Metro, marking a significant step towards modernizing Lahore’s public transit system. The fully underground metro train is expected to:

  • Reduce travel time for daily commuters
  • Ease traffic congestion in one of Pakistan’s busiest cities
  • Cut down air pollution, aligning with the government’s Green Punjab Vision
  • Provide an affordable and efficient transport solution for thousands of passengers

A Vision for a Modern Lahore

This project comes as part of a broader initiative led by CM Maryam Nawaz to enhance Lahore’s public transport. Recently, she also launched the city’s first electric bus service, consisting of 27 electric buses with a Rs20 fare. Plans are underway to introduce 500 additional electric buses by August, along with the expansion of the Metrobus service to Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
